15 Boats Take on Light Air and Strong Current at Cal Race Week

The Melges 15 fleet returned to California Yacht Club for Cal Race Week on May 30–31, with 15 boats on the starting line in challenging conditions that tested patience, boat handling, and tactical decision-making.

While the forecast suggested moderate sea breezes, both days delivered generally light winds in the 7–9 knot range, with Sunday trending even lighter. Adding to the challenge was a choppy sea state for the wind strength, creating a physical and mental test for competitors, particularly those less familiar with Melges 15 sailing in Southern California's ocean conditions.

A full moon brought significant tidal current throughout the weekend, making starts, laylines, and mark roundings especially tricky. Weather mark approaches often required careful consideration of current set and drift, while leeward gate roundings and starting-line positioning demanded constant awareness of the moving water.

After seven races, Robbie King and Karla Reinhardt aboard Dark Wave emerged victorious, putting together one of the most consistent scorecards of the weekend. Their series included three race wins and only one finish outside the top three, allowing them to hold off a hard-charging fleet.

Morgan and Emily Paxhia aboard Enigma finished second overall after a remarkable comeback. Following a seventh-place finish in Race 3, the brother-sister team closed the regatta with four consecutive race wins, narrowing the gap to the leaders but ultimately falling short of King and Reinhardt's consistency across the series.

Jay and Jackie Gollison completed the podium in third place, highlighted by a victory in Race 3 and a steady string of top-five finishes throughout the weekend.

The depth of the fleet was evident throughout the regatta, with several teams posting race wins and frequent position changes throughout the standings.

Beyond the results, one of the most encouraging aspects of the weekend was the number of family teams competing throughout the fleet. Morgan and Emily Paxhia raced as a brother-sister team, while Jay and Jackie Gollison continued their success as a husband-and-wife crew. Ian Sammis finished fifth sailing with his son Jax, an up-and-coming junior sailor, while Tim Clarke spent the weekend rotating crews between his two daughters. The Melges 15 continues to prove itself as a platform where highly competitive racing and family participation can coexist, helping introduce the next generation of sailors while maintaining a strong level of competition on the racecourse.

SailSync's fleet-wide analysis highlighted just how competitive the fleet has become. Upwind performance was remarkably tight, with most boats separated by less than 0.7 knots of average starboard-tack speed over ground. Downwind, many teams achieved peak starboard-tack speeds between 5.8 and 6.1 knots, while VMG numbers clustered around 4.0–4.1 knots, suggesting opportunities remain to better convert raw speed into gains toward the leeward mark.

The largest performance differences appeared on port-tack downwind VMG, indicating that downwind mode selection, wave management, and tactical positioning continue to be key separators as the fleet develops.

"This was my third Cal Race Week in the Melges 15 fleet, which is consistently one of the most competitive classes in the regatta," said Karla Reinhardt. "It's been fun to watch the fleet grow over the past few years. Although the winds were lighter than we'd hoped, the racing was still incredibly close. The conditions created great learning opportunities, especially around weight placement and boat handling. Thanks to VELA LA for sponsoring the Vakaros system, which keeps the starts running smoothly, and thanks to all of the volunteers who contributed their time. It was a great weekend with beautiful weather. We couldn't have asked for much more—except maybe a little more wind."

The California State Championship Series now turns to its next stop at Long Beach Race Week, June 26–28, where the fleet will once again face a different set of conditions and continue building momentum across Southern California.
