The fourth and final event of the Melges 15 Winter Series delivered a true showcase of conditions, wrapping up an incredible season at the Melges Watersports Center in Merritt Island, Florida. Over 100 boats made the trip for the three-day Midwinter Championship, once again highlighting the strength and depth of the class.
Friday set the tone with classic Melges 15 conditions — 14–18 knots, a bit of chop downwind, and long, physical races. Three races were completed in ideal planing conditions, with boats ripping downwind and teams fully powered up. Success on the day came down to confidence in speed, clean air off the line, and minimizing mistakes. Teams that prioritized conservative starts, stayed patient for shifts, and executed smooth, mistake-free boat handling were able to separate themselves in the breeze.

The second day brought a completely different challenge. A dying westerly breeze made racing a test of patience and positioning, where getting off the line clean and committing early were critical. As the pressure faded, the fleet compressed and new teams emerged at the front, taking advantage of the shifty, unpredictable conditions.
After a postponement ashore, sailors were sent back out for a late afternoon race in a new 5–7 knot sea breeze. With the reset came another reshuffle, as different teams found their rhythm in the lighter air and battled it out at the front of the fleet.
Sunday morning greeted competitors with glass, but a light westerly filled just enough to get one final race underway. With limited time and breeze, PRO AJ Schwaeda did an excellent job managing the course and squeezing in a result, ultimately shortening the race at the final windward mark. Just minutes after the start, a rocket launch lit up the sky over the racecourse — an unforgettable moment and a fitting highlight to close out the weekend.

Across all three days, the variety in conditions pushed teams to adapt quickly — from fully powered, high-speed racing to light-air experimentation and tuning adjustments. It was a reminder of just how dynamic and competitive the Melges 15 fleet has become, with different teams rising to the top in different conditions.
