The Melges 15 West Coast fleet returned to Coronado for the SDYC Spring Dinghy Regatta, hosted by Coronado Yacht Club and expertly run by San Diego Yacht Club. Seven races were completed over two days in classic South Bay conditions—warm temperatures and a consistent sea breeze that built each afternoon, delivering tight, high-quality racing across the fleet.
A strong group of 10 boats competed, with Robbie King and Karla Reinhardt taking the overall win after a consistent and well-executed weekend. King/Reinhardt posted a 1-1 in the final two races on Sunday to secure the regatta, finishing ahead of Morgan Paxhia in second and Allie Blecher in third.
Shifts, Starts, and First Beats Defined the Weekend
Across both days, a few clear performance patterns emerged. The West Coast fleet continues to integrate sailsync.ai for performance insights, with several notable takeaways:
First-beat execution proved decisive. In multiple races, the eventual winner rounded the first windward mark in the lead and controlled the race from there. Clean starts and immediate commitment to a side were critical, with very few opportunities to recover from poor first legs.
Side selection required adaptability. Early races favored the right side of the course, but as conditions evolved, successful sailors adjusted quickly—most notably switching left when pressure and shifts dictated. The ability to stay dynamic, rather than committing blindly to a favored side, separated the top finishers.
Starting line positioning mattered. Boats starting closer to the pin with a slight bias advantage consistently gained early leverage, while those starting deep on the line struggled to recover.
Boat Handling and Mode Discipline
sailsync.ai data from the weekend reinforced a familiar theme: mode discipline drives VMG.
Top performers minimized unnecessary maneuvers and maintained steady angles upwind, resulting in tighter speed bands and higher average VMG. Boats with wider speed variation or frequent tacks saw measurable losses over the course of each beat.
Downwind, gains were made through efficient maneuvering and sustained pressure sailing, with the fastest boats linking modes cleanly rather than over-handling.

Congrats to the winners!
1st - Karla Reinhardt
2nd - Morgan Paxhia
3rd - Allie Blecher
