The 2026 Melges 15 ILYA Championship at Clear Lake Yacht Club delivered three fantastic days of racing, challenging conditions, and plenty of fun both on and off the water. After eight races, Owen Kohut and Mason Keane finished as the overall champions, putting together an impressive and consistent performance throughout the weekend.
Friday kicked off the regatta with ideal sailing conditions. A steady 10–13 mph breeze allowed race committee to complete four races, setting the stage for a highly competitive championship. Clear Lake served up puffy conditions allowing for epic downwind rides. Kohut and Keane wasted no time taking control of the regatta, winning the opening two races before adding more race victories as the weekend progressed.
Saturday brought some rain showers, but that didn’t stop the smiles in the fleet. Two races were completed in the rain, and Kohut and Keane continued to dominate, picking up two more bullets and extending their lead heading into the final day.
Due to the rain, the social event was moved to be inside at the local VFW. Clear Lake Yacht Club and the ILYA know how to throw a party. The fleet enjoyed an evening filled with great food, bingo, raffle prizes, and plenty of time to catch up with fellow competitors after a full day on the water.
On Sunday, the sun was back out and with that, brought the biggest breeze of the weekend, ranging from 13-16 mph. The championship ended with exciting, close racing across the fleet as teams battled for every position. Downwinds were especially fun with top speeds reaching almost 18knots in the big puffs, making for an exciting finish to an already outstanding regatta.
In the end, Owen Kohut and Mason Keane successfully held onto their lead and claimed the Championship title. Congratulations to Owen, Mason, and the entire fleet for an incredible weekend of racing.
